Many thanks.
Also, the symbol that is the end of the track is hidden behind the horizontal zoom in the top right hand corner.
How do I grab the end of the track and move it to where I want?

That has been this way, since GarageBAnd 10 has been released. 😟
Use the zoom control in the upper right corner of the Track Area to zoom out as far as possible to show more bars. Then it should be possible to drag the "End of Song" marker to change the duration of the project. Usually a tiny fraction of the marker will peep out behind the zoom controls. If you manage to grab the tip of this marker, the cursor will change to bracket shape - then move the cursor away from the zoom controls.
Thanks...just one more question! Is there any way to set the automation (volume), other than moving the line manually? It's a delicate and frustrating task of trying to set it at the right level manually.
I don't know of any other way. But once you have the automation set right, you can copy and paste automation values between tracks or within the track, see this help page:
Select, copy, move, and delete automation http://help.apple.com/garageband/mac/10.0/#gbnd010a7072
Shame, as it's very fiddly and frustrating on a 13" screen.
Many thanks for all your help!
