contact disappeared from iphone

All of my contacts disappeared from my iphone 4. I have them in my computer but trying to get these back was not how I wanted to spend a perfect summer morning. I updated everything, iTunes, iphone, to no avail. Added the icloud account,nothing. They did come back but missing the most recent additions. Until now I felt Apple had a very trusted product.
