Macbook doesn't register TV

Hi,

I am trying to connect my mid-2010 Macbook Pro (running version 10.9.4 of OS X) to a brand new Magnavox TV. I am using an HDMI cord and a mini DisplayPort, both of which have worked in the past. When the TV is off, my computer recognizes the external display. However, as soon as I turn the TV on, my Macbook no longer recognizes it.

Any thoughts or ideas?
