Ipod classic 4gb serial

Ipod mini classic 4gb 2005 while trying to charge battery i am being directed to apple support site and showing me a sad face over a triangle with an ! in the middle. Apple site does not have any solutions for this item and i can't afford the cost of a service call with Apple
