My macbook pro died on me the other day and after carrying out a series of tests and different restarts, it turns out that the disc is corrupt. is there any software i can purchase to retrieve any data from the laptop please? i am using mavericks 10.9.3 on a 13'' dual-core Intel Core i5 which is about 3-4 yrs old.

What 'tests' did you perform. Did you try a safe start?
I tried restarting holding down the option key, agin holding down the c key, another time with the s key and also a pram reset. I always end up back with the apple logo and spinning icon.
i tried the safe start but the spinning wheel never came on the screen, just the apple logo
i will try the safe start again as i waited for a few minutes before giving up as the spinning wheel didn't show. i have just looked at my laptop and the spinning wheel is now there
