Will the iPhone 5 battery charge whilst in Recovery Mode?

My battery seemed to be failing. I was told by the manager of a phone shop that it was probably not the battery but software and was advised to connect to iTunes in recovery mode to remove any software faults the phone may have. The battery was not charging but whilst "on charge" displayed the flashing apple logo and got quite warm. The recovery failed due to lack of battery and is now stuck in recovery mode. When connected to the charger it no longer shows the apple logo - only the recovery mode screen asking to connect to iTunes. The phone does not get warm whilst connected to the charger. Will the iPhone 5 battery charge whilst in recovery mode?
