USB Optical wired mouse not working

I'm using a standard low-price usb optical mouse, it works on my windows laptop. Plugs into mac no noise is made but the light comes on and in the system preferences the settings for the mouse do come up and disappear when I unplug it!

Any help would be much appreciated!
