safari 7.0.4 running very slowly

I have an iMac with 32GB memory and a new external LaCie 12GB RAID. In recent days, starting I am not sure when, Safari has been running very slowly. I am not sure if this started after I went to Mavericks 10.9.4 or later than that. Typical symptoms are *very* slow page loading or page loading freezes.

I am connected wirelessly to high speed broadband (BT Infinity) which typically deliveries about 20 kbit/sec.

If anyone could make suggestions on how to fix this I would be grateful.

Hi Michael,

Does this occur with only some sites or with most sites? Example: the Apple forums we are in are running terribly slow for me since a major change Apple made a few weeks ago.

Do you experience slowness when NOT using a browser? Do other browsers (FireFox; Chrome; etc) also run slowly?

Here are some things on your computer that can cause general slowness in Safari:

  • almost all anti-virus/internet security software
  • any "I'll Clean your Mac for You" programs.
  • Incompatible extensions and/or plug-ins
  • "adware" programs
  • out-of-date extensions and/or plug-ins
  • third-party backup programs for external hard drives
  • third-party offsite (server-based or "Cloud"-based) backup services.
  • torrent usage or P2P participation

You may not know what you have and don't have, as some unscrupulous download sites are quietly bundling cr@pware with what you might think are legitimate downloads. You can give us a safe snapshot of your system that we can use to give a quick first check for issues. Please download and install this free utility:

Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance.

Suffered with the same problem for a few days now, put it down to a BT Infinity issue. some pages load just as quickly as normal, then after four pages or so, you will come across one that doesn't and takes a refresh to load at the correct speed. Tried live chat with BT's advisors last night and kept getting cut off as the broadband connection fluctuated in and out. BT seemed to be having massive issues last night, and the support email I sent still hasn't been answered 24 hours later.

Tried my Mac Book Pro at the office today, via wifi, with no issues there. Previously had issues with the same mac book at home on BT Infinity.

Thanks. I think I can answer "No" to most of your questions, perhaps all of them. Here's an Etresoft printout. (I've migrated this system across a number of Macs over the years.)
