The Xeon processor in the Mac Pro features a Hardware assist to implement Error Correction Code memory. Eight additional syndrome bits (parity combinations of the bits in a word) are stored with each word in memory. When read back, single bit errors are corrected by Hardware on-the-fly (no slowdown), and uncorrectable errors, such as most double-bit errors cause a distinctive kernel panic, machine check, and either uncorrected error or error overflow. This is by design, to keep such errors from poisoning your data.

While on other Macs this might indicate a bad socket, on a Mac Pro, it correlates VERY strongly with a Bad DIMM.


When a correction is made, a bit is set and background software usually collects those bits and reflects most of them in a report. So you can see which module is going bad if you check often. The report looks like this:
