xcode prevents iMac from waking up?

I'm trying to troubleshoot a lock-up of my mac during a wake-up. 9 times out of 10 it will wake up to a greyish black screen. The other times, the content of the screen is visible but the mouse moves but nothing else responds. The mouse typically will float around the screen but does not respond to wake anything up. I've tried the key combinations to kill the front task (CMD-SHIFT-ALT-ESC) for 3 seconds but it doesn't do anything. The only way I can recover is to power cycle the iMac.

The problem seems to be more prevalent (or corresponding) to when Xcode/IOSSimulator is running in the foreground/background. When you are working on coding, you don't want to be shutting down the app every time you walk away from the computer. I can't say this is definitely the association but there is a strong coincidence of me noticing this problem when I am using it.

Is there any way to determine what is locked up definitively in the logs after the power cycle?. I have taken a look at diagnostic info but nothing pops out for me.

I'm getting worried that I'm going to start corrupting my hard drive by hard power cycling it every day (or multiple times a day). I've attached my Etrecheck dump to see if there is anything relevant in there. All my drivers, etc.. are up to date and all software is current.
