OSX 10.9.4 ~ unable to change, unlock or modify hosts file??

Hey guys, going crazy here. Have tried Sudo commands, shell commands; trying to CHMOD myself to add permissions/ownership. Nothing works; I cannot unlock the file, no matter what I do. I'm admin, but cannot alter the file /private/etc/hosts I'm at a loss. Any ideas??

Open Terminal. Enter or paste:

sudo pico /private/etc/hosts

Press RETURN. Enter admin password when prompted. It is not echoed, so type carefully. Press RETURN again. Edit the file as you want, then use CTRL-O to write out the changes, then CTRL-X to exit the editor.

Do not willy-nilly start changing permissions. This is dangerous.

I have exactly the same issue with Yosemite.

No way to modify-rewrite-replace-unlock hosts file with my admin account.

I even tried to use the app Gas Mask to be able to create a new hosts and use it temporarily but by some reason OS X doesn't allow to "activate" a new hosts.

I already repaired the disk permissions but didn't work.

Any help will be highly welcome.
