printing software for exact positioning
I'm printing an image over another image, and I want to position it exactly where I want to.
Is there any software that allows to position an image on top of another image, visibly ?
Thanks!

Any application, that can handle graphics overlays - Keynote, Preview, PhotoshopGimp, and many more. What exactly do you want to do? Create a new image by combining two in one, or create a text document with overlapping photos?
Thanks Leonie,
Yes, I actually want to print one image over a book page with text. So the image should be positioned in the middle of the text field.
Page has margins around the text, sometimes different on all sides. I play with margins, but still doesn't work well.
Thanks!
You could try to print the book page as a PDF file, and then load the PDF as a full page image in Preview.Use "File >Export" to convert the PDF to PNG format and open the PNG in Preview. Open your second image in Preview and select all with âA. Now you can copy and paste the second image into the first and drag it to the correct position, also resize it.
I'm printing on top of the real page, not on it's image or scan. That's the problem..
Sorry, I misunderstood completely.
I'll try to find a printing expert to help.
If all fails, start with a scan of your real page, position the inserted image, then remove the scanned background and print borderless.
Pages will do the job very nicely. Drag the two images into a Pages layout, move, place and resize as needed. Also any 3rd party image editor that supports layers can do the job.
Some Image Editors That Support layers:
Photoshop Elements 11 for Mac - $79
GraphicConverter - $40Rainbow Painter - $30
Imagerie - $38
Acorn - $50
Pixelmator - $60
Seashore - Free
GIMP for Mac - Free
Xee 2.1 - free
The demo version of Omnigraffle is another app that can do the job. The following is a 20 x 30 poster collage that I created with Pages and OmniGraffle:
Thanks OT, this is not exactly what I'm looking..
I have page from a book. On this page I want to print an image, which is already resized to fit the width of the text on this page.
Before I print this image on the page, I use GraphicConverter's page setup for print to set the size of the Paper/Page and adjust margins around the text.
I need to print only where the text is, not in the white fields around.
I'd like to position the image right on the last line of the text on the bottom of the page.
So, again, the Page is a real page that I cut out from a book where on top of it I want to print an Image, but only where the text is, and to position where I want, but mostly on the last line of the text at the bottom.
I printed using GC positioning, Center Bottom (original size and scaled) and Absolute Center. All three printed part of the image on bottom margin, although I set the margin, not to print.
Do you know how to do that ?
Thanks!
Let's (try to) clarify:
Your goal is to print on top of pre-printed sheets of paper. You want to control exactly where what you are printing appears on the page.
What you are printing is an image.
You don't need (though it might be helpful) software that shows you what the result looks like. What you need is software that correctly positions the image on the sheets you are using.
You have used Graphic Converter to print, but it has not given you the results you expected.
Right so far?
Questions:
What printer are you using?
Have you tried using another printer?
Have you tried any other program to print the image?
Has Graphic Converter printed reliably before? Is there anything about the image, the page size, or the settings that you can think of that might be causing GC to print beyond where you want it to?
Have you done anything to rule out a problem with the printer mis-registering the sheet of paper (the sheet might not line up with where the software thinks it is)?
If Kirby has described your goal correctly you can use Pages or one of the editors to do what you want. Create a blank layout with the correct paper size. Place your sized photo on the layout, size it to the exact dimensions you need and position it where you want it on the page.
Too test the positioning print the photo to a blank page and hold it up to the page that you want to print on eventually. With a light behind the two pages you can see how well you placed the photo and make any adjustments. I do this frequently with Christmas letters on preprinted Christmas paper.
OT, thanks, I'll try your suggestion.
Just remember as in carpentry: measure twice, cut/print once. đ
Thank you Kirby,
You got it right.
Questions:
What printer are you using? --- "CANON ip2700"
Have you tried using another printer? ----- "DON'T HAVE"
Have you tried any other program to print the image? ----- "YES" , and GC is the best in this regard".
Has Graphic Converter printed reliably before? Is there anything about the image, the page size, or the settings that you can think of that might be causing GC to print beyond where you want it to? -----"NO IDEA. I'm only trying GC, like it very much, except this little problem."
Have you done anything to rule out a problem with the printer mis-registering the sheet of paper (the sheet might not line up with where the software thinks it is)?....."That's exactly probably what it is"
I'll figure out eventually, just need to waste tons of ink. Meantime I'm communicating with Thorsten from GC. He for sure will figure out.
Thanks anyway!
