Q: Roaming network Time Capsule and Express - internet drops out when I connect the Express by ethernet.

Wow, it's really nice. Here's what I'm seeing. Wifi is looking good right now. My network is just plain old Apple eff841.

But I'm a little confused - I see 5GHz versions of my networks, but as you can see, neither of them have been configured to create 5GHz networks. What's that all about??

There is a discussion about a WiFi-Scan Option in Wireless Diagnostics -> Utilities, but 10.9.3 on my machine only shows Utilities pane. Do I have to play Piano on the keyboard to bring it up?

PS: I found the native one, which is less colorful.

You have a simultaneous dual band router, and Apple's default setting for the router assigns the same wireless network name to both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Wireless devices will automatically connect to the best signal based on their capabilities, distance from the router, etc.

Simple....and the setting that most users should use for that reason.

So, both bands are always being broadcast. You cannot turn one "on" and other "off" or vice versa.

That 5 GHz option that you see is there if you want to assign a different name for the 5 GHz band. So, you would have one name for the 2.4 GHz band and another name for the 5 Ghz band.

Sometimes I prefer the older single-band Extremes/Expresses.

I have never used this. Not intuitive, but maybe I am missing something obvious.

I get to it by doing:

• Opt-click on Wifi menubar icon.
• Select Open Wireless Diagnostics
• Click on Window menu and select Utilities.
• Click on the "Wi-fi Scan" tab at the top of the Utilities window.

Wow, thanks for clearing that up. I always thought I had to create the 5GHz network separately, otherwise it would just default to 2.4. Thank you!
