Q: iBook G3 black screen

Black screen on iBook G3. HOW can I get and transfer files from the iBook hard disk to my MBP? I have tried firewire, local network and so on.

    In order to do Firewire, you need to start the machine with the T key held down and no cables hooked up except power.

    Give it about a couple minutes before letting go of the the T key.

    Then connect the Firewire cable between it and your other Mac.

    You do have to be aware of data compatibility issues with non-portable file formats like Appleworks and others, and see this tip on migrating:

    You may be better off removing the hard drive and putting it inside a Parallel ATA 2.5" Firewire case such as this one:

    A black screen is often caused by a damaged cable connection from the (logic board to display) or a broken backlight. You may try to hook up your iBook to a TV or external Display with an appropiate adapter cable.

    I was completely surprised when the screen came back today - for 2 minutes! First in fw target mode and thereafter when I started it up. But shortly after that the sign with many languages came up - "You have to restart your computer! - and the sign started to jump and flash! I rebooted and the screen was black again...

    Fortunately I was able to get all of the important documents from the iBook, which was my goal.

    There usually are hardware issues behind many of the Kernel Panic situations;

    those may include defective RAM (on-board or installed, or defective logic board)

    and other items that may appear in a Console log crash report, depending on the

    Mac OS (if OS X) running in the computer.

    You were fortunate to be able to access the old iBook to copy your content!
