messages "An error occurred while activating. Try again later"

Hi
have an iMac (2,5 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 latest OS 10.9.4) and I keep getting errors while logging in to messages 😟

- I can send and receive imessages on my iPhone and iPad with no problems
- my apple ID is verified

- I don't have modified the "hosts" file
- My time is set on "automaticly set time and date"
- When mountain lion came out, I had no problem what so ever
- I erased my HDD and did a clean instal. The first thing I did was start imessage and log in.. same error
- I tried another apple ID (from my mom) and that didn't word either
- I changed my password and tried again

- I searched the ports and opened them on my router
- I reseted my icloud keychain

- I searched on the internet and tried everything I could find.

Can anyone help me? There was a time that I could use messages with no problem at all, but like a year ago, I kept getting this error.
Thank you kindly 🙂

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.

Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.

Step 1

Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait tor it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.

Step 2

Sign out of iMessage on all your Apple devices. Log out and log back in. Try again to sign in.

Step 3

Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.

Step 4

From the menu bar, select

 ▹ About This Mac

Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.

Step 5

Take the steps suggested in this support article. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.

Step 6

From the menu bar, select

System Preferences... Network

If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If the box marked SOCKS Proxy is checked, uncheck it. You don’t need to change any other settings in the window. Click OK and then Apply. Test.

The result may be that you can't connect to the Internet at all. Revert the change if that happens, or if iMessage still doesn't work. Remember that you must Apply any changes you make in the preference pane before they take effect.

Step 7

Select from the menu bar

 ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player Storage

and click

Block all sites from storing information on this computer

Close the preference pane.

Step 8

Make sure you know the ID and password you use with iMessage. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.

Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to find and delete all items with "iMessage" or "com.apple.idms" in the name. Log out and log back in.

Step 9

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.

Step 10

Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you start up, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. After testing, restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.

If iMessage worked in safe mode, but still doesn't work when you restart in "normal" mode, stop here and post your results.

Step 11

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.apsd.plist

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Step 12

Reset theNVRAM.

Step 13

Reinstall OS X.

Step 14

If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support.

Hi,

Whilst Linc's List is the most comprehensive there is one other issue that it might be that has come to light recently.

Open the Font Book and check near the bottom of the List that you have AppleGothic.ttf

This is a font that is used in the "registration" Process of the Apple ID in Messages with the iMessages server.

Even when you have done this once the app will re-do it automatically if it have been Off and your restart Messages when or soon after restarting the Mac.

Thank you Linc Davis

I tried every step now and the last one I tried worked!!
I used this information (About NVRAM and PRAM) to reset nvram / pram

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.

I also downloaded the beta for Yosemite, but Messages didn't worked initially.

Hello,

You said people should reply to this thread if iMessage worked on the guest account. For me, that worked. But when I try to login to iMessage in my other account (the non-guest account) I cannot login, it gives the following error: "An error occurred during activation, try again". When I try again it doesn't work either. However there is a little difference between your OS and mine, yours is Mavericks and mine is Yosemite. I don't know if Yosemite is the problem.

Hope you can help me getting my iMessage back to life 😀

Hi,

There is one issue with joining this thread that has been marked Solved/Correct its that some of the participants are unlikely to come back and read new posts added to it.

Linc's details instructions are the ones that say to post back if you have it working in another Mac User Account at step 9

Other issues will eventually point out that the Apple ID does not work with the Mac in any Mac User account suggesting that the issue is with the server.

If it works in another Mac User account then the issue is with that Mac User account.

Step 8 has already dealt with a possible Keychain issue so we are left looking at the Preferences files (.plist) items that are store and effect this app and also whether you have Permissions and Ownership of those file.

IN the Finder use the View Menu > Show Path Bar

Then use the Go Menu > Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/Preferences

Find the com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist item and Drag it to the Trash
Restart the Messages app.

It will need you to re-enter the Apple ID info into the iMessages account and accept the pop ups about what any other devices is using.

Basically it forces the Apple ID to be re-registered.

If that does not work find the com.apple.imessages.bag.plist and Restart the app

This forces to reconnect with one of the iMessages servers.

If that does not work Right Click the Preferences Folder icon in the Path Bar and select the "Get Info" option.

In the info panel that appears scroll to the bottom.

Your short name should be listed here with Read and Write Permissions.

Then highlight your Name and use the Cogwheel icon under the list.

This should list a line about making you the Owner but in greyed out text. (if it is greyed out you already Own it)

The above is where the files are stored.

However in Mavericks and Yosemite the Messages is one of th Sandboxed apps that effectively have a "Read and Write route" to those .plists

In the Finder window you have open click on the Library icon to open the Library itself.

Then navigate to Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Preferences

You will notice that this has Aliases pointing to files of the same names as in ~/Library/Preferences.

Right click this Preferences Folder icon and do the Get Info thing.

Check you have Read and Write Permissions and that you Own it.

Repeat for each folder back to the Library one (Library, Data, com.apple.iChat )

Hi,

We are talking about the Library that is in your Home Folder (the Little House icon one).

The full path is hard Drive Name/Users/Yourshortname/Library

Commonly it is written as ~/Library/

See the first pic on this page http://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-reveal-your-library-folder-in-lio n-or-mountain-lion--mac-31972

In Mavericks (well Lion and above) this Library is Invisible so you have to use other means to access it.

One way I described above

In the Finder use the View Menu > Show Path Bar

Then use the Go Menu > Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/Preferences

It is the second line of this bit that is required.

An Alternative way is to use the Go Menu in the Finder and hold down the ALT key as you go.

This adds the Library as an option to the Menu list and you can select it and then navigate from there.

It can also be made to be visible all the time.

User uploaded file

The Path Bar (And the title of the Window/folder) show I am in my Home Folder that has the Little House icon and the the Library is highlighted.

One method http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/

There are others.

as in the View Menu in the Finder > CMD +J to reveal View Options

And then the check box at the bottom.

Hi,

Navigate to ~/Library/Containers.com.apple.soagent/Data/Library/Preferences

Most of the ones in this folder are Aliases but there are some that are actual files.

Delete all of these and Restart the Computer before restarting the app.
