Connecting Canon MF4350d via usb under OS10.9.4 scanner driver won't install

When driver loaded, the printer/scanner does not show up in the add + list. Canon "ToolBox" will not open. Canon site says they support MF4350 thru OS10.9.3

anyone had any luck with work around? It prints (different driver) just fine.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), Canon driver scan gear ver. 2.2.0_

To use the scanner, you do not add it to the Printers & Scanners preference pane. So as you have noticed, the scanner component does not appear in the Add window when you select to add a printer or scanner.

Also, you said to select scan on the MF then send to computer, don't understand that. There is no send to computer choice on the MF in scan mode.

Sorry. Slightly wrong information. The MF devices that have an Ethernet port or WiFi support will show you more than one option when you press the Scan button on the MF. With your model only having USB, then pressing the Scan button will only show Scanning Mode, which is correct and what I should have said.

So with the MF set to Scanning Mode, open MF Toolbox and click on Scanner on the menu bar. You should see the MF4350 USB in a window similar to what I have shown below

Note that I think you will see MF4340-4350 USB. Which mentions the MF4350 as connected via USB, ensure this is selected (highlighted)

With the MF43xx USB connection selected, you can now click the Save button as shown below

This will display a new window letting you set your scanning preferences, similar to that show below.

If you can get this window to display, click the green Start button to test that you can scan a document. If this does not work, then please reply. If it does work, then you are ready to being scanning from the Mac.

Sydney, as in Australia? Visited there and NZ in 2012, I'd go back in a minute. My wife (67 yrs.) did the bridge climb (still brags about it).

To answer your last, yes I still get the same error message when the USB cable disconnected. That makes sense, but not when cable connected, that indicates (to me at least) that the driver doesn't "see" the scanner. As I said though, the printer function works just, even when MF is in low power mode (sleeping). Device comes on and prints.

PAHU,

Just opened Toolbox for the **** off it, and it worked as you have indicated it should!

The only changes to the MAC system since my last email is me loading the Logictec software for the K750 Keyboard for MAC.

I notice the Icon for toolbox now has the Scan Function panel (see below) over the Icon in the dock, it wasn't there before.User uploaded file

With the MF in the "sleep" mode and connected thru the external hub, I scanned several documents in color (300 dpi), saved as them as .pdf, word .docs etc. all worked as expected.

Now for the BIG test I'm going to reboot (cold boot) and see if it still works. Having many years in the PC/Windows world I KNOW it will not work next time!

I'll follow up with you after the reboot.

For the Canon MF series, the scanner component is not displayed in the Add Printer window. So the reset of the printing system will be a waste of your time.

To use the scanner, first select the Scan button on the MF and set it to Computer. Then open Canon MF Toolbox on the Mac, select the Scanner menu and ensure the MF4350 is selected. Once this is set then you can use one of the buttons like Save to scan a document.

Thanks for the reply, but...

Following your instructions the following is or isn't happening;

Installed the driver again (2.2.0_1), I tried to add a device, the only new choice was the MF4350 FAX which is including in the scanner driver along with the tool box. I added the fax device, no tool box in MAC Doc. Also, you said to select scan on the MF then send to computer, don't understand that. There is no send to computer choice on the MF in scan mode. All in all, I"m still scanning with the PC Laptop (works great like it has for years).

Again thanks for trying.

I select scanner, then MF4320-MF4350 Hub, click that, then get the error message.

But it should say MF4320-MF4350 USB, not MF4320-MF4350 Hub.

You mentioned earlier that there was no Hub in use, but based on this recent information it would appear that there is a hub between the MF and the Mac. And this will stop the MF Toolbox application working with the MF. So if there is a hub, remove it and connect the MF directly to the Mac. Then see if this Scanner menu changes to MF4320-MF4350 USB

Your screen shots refer to MF 4800 series, is that a problem, am I using the same driver you had succes with?

Yes you are using the same driver - you are just connected to a different model of MF. This screen shot was just an example to show you what you should see in the Scanner menu - namely the MF model with the word USB next to it.

The MF Toolbox supports many different models of Canon MF series. For that particular screen grab, the Mac was connected to an MF4800 model. But you can also see an MF4360-MF4390 USB in grey text. You connection should show your model with the USB and in bold text. This grey text indicates that this USB connected MF is not present. And if this was the only scanner set in the MF Toolbox application on this Mac, then it would error stating that no scanner was connected when opened.

Being a new MAC user I don't how to do a "screen grab".

Command Shift 4 will make cross-hairs appear on the display. You can then click and drag from one corner of the image to the other and then release. You will hear a camera sound and the image will appear on the Desktop with the time and date as its filename.

What I see is MF4320_MF4350 USB, with or without the HUB in line.

That's good. Earlier you wrote MF4320-MF4350 Hub so my reply was based on that.

So now I want to check if the scanner driver is present. Can you open Finder and click on the word Go in the menu and select the entry Go to Folder. Then type (or copy and paste) the following.

/Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources

Then press the Go button. This will open the TWAIN Data Sources folder and in here should be a stack of Canon model.s files. Do you see the "Canon MF4320-4350 USB.ds" file?

Thanks for checking that. Next thing to check is the connection from the Mac to the MF. Can you open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and select USB in the left column. The top right pane will show all the USB busses on the Mac and under one of these should be the MF4350. If it is shown, then please select the MF4350. The bottom right pane will show information about the MF4350. Can you take a screen shot of this System Information view and post back here for me to check.

Thanks for the images John. The MF4320-4350 settings are pretty much the same as what I see here with an MF4340. I just don't have a Mac here at home with USB 3.0 ports to compare the top image but I think that also looks okay. I will check this on a new Mac when I get in to the office tomorrow - just gone 10.30pm here in Sydney.

One last question for the evening. If you unplug the MF USB cable and open MF Toolbox, do you get the same error message?
