Q: Can older XServes use 2 Terabyte drives?

XServe model A1196

Part Number Z0DB0025N

Shipped 01/25/07

I purchased a 2 TB XServe drive: 2TB Xserve Hard Drive 2TB A1279 Early 2009 A1279 MB449LL/A CTO

When installed, the top light glows yellow then turns red. The blue light never flashes. The disk never mounts. Disk Utility doesn't see it. System profiler doesn't see it.

Was there a bus change or something that would prevent me from using the 2 TB drive on my XServe?

Xserve, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

    Hi intandemdesign,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

The articles below outline the configurable options and description of status lights indications. From the information in those articles, it looks that Xserve doesn't support the combination of drives your using and a red drive module light means there is a failure.
