Carplay

HI all,

i just wanted to find out something with regards to the carplay enabled devices. Does carplay use the head units as the gps device or does it use the iPhones as the GPS device?

thanks,

Rob

Mark ... I can say that though the iphone does most of the heavy lifting for apps, when it comes to GPS, I can testify that with my Pioneer AVIC-5000 NEX, the Maps is useless without the installed GPS antennae. For one or two reasons I tried to use my head unit without the cable installed. Maps would place me in another state. Both on the received and when I'm looking at my iphone connected to the head unit with the lightning cable. It forced the phone to show the wrong GPS Coordinates. When I pulled the plug, it appeared as if the iPhone then used it's GPS signal and corrected my location. Reapplied the cable and carplay and I'm back in another state.

I ultimately, gave up and absolutely had to use the included GPS antennae for Maps to function properly. And it kind of makes sense since the phone could be buried in an arm rest or glove box hidden from GPS signals, that the iPhone would rely on the head unit for GPS info.

So to you point, I'm not sure it's gonna put a big dent in your data plan using maps on the road.

I have that model, Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX, in my 2014 Honda CR-V, and I just have to ask...why would you not want to connect the NEX's GPS antenna?

I use Apple Maps (CarPlay) for trips around town, mainly for the integration with my contacts, map history, etc., but mostly because A-GPS works great where GPS does poorly).

I use NEX's navigation feature for long trips, mainly because it gives a TON more features (current speed, max speed, etc.), but mostly because GPS works great where A-GPS does poorly (locks into more satellites).

Initially I had to connect the GPS Antenna because the clock date and time were wrong. The Avic-5000NEX uses GPS to get this information. Attempting to use maps before attaching the antenna had me a couple hundred miles away from my true location. Once I did connect the antenna for the first time to get my time synced, it was only a few city blocks off. Using the Assisted GPS is not as accurate as I like, and plus it will use my data plan which I'd like to avoid.
