Q: Repair Boot Camp Partition

Dear Team,

I have a problem where after restoring my OSX installation to a new drive after crash, my bootcamp is not working. I get an error:

"No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key"

It is also not showing up in the OSX boot loader although Startup Disk control panel is seeing it.

My stats are: Macbook pro 13", early 2011, 8G RAM, the new 500G drive is installed in the optical bay via OWC data doubler, while the old original 320G mac drive is in the main hard drive bay.

I first tried to use bootcamp assistant to do a fresh install with the intention to restore an EASEUS backup. However after the drive was prepared and the mac rebooted to install windows, the windows install disc would not boot. I then decided re-installed Win7 to the bootcamp partition by restoring an EASUS backup by taking the drive out of the macbook pro and using a Windows PC to restore. I also tried to convert from a FAT32 file format which disk utility had done under OSX, to NTFS by using the command prompt conversion under Win7. That conversion process resulted in a cyclic redundancy error, even though the BOOTCAMP partition was showing up in disk utility as NTFS after I put back in the drive. By the way I did the NTFS conversion before restoring the backup.

Finally, when I restored the EASEUS backup, the drive got renamed from BOOTCAMP to Untitled even though I specified BOOTCAMP.

I saw in this post as commented by Christopher Murphy, to run:

sudo gpt -r -vv show disk0

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

The results are as follows:

Randalls-MacBook-Pro:~ randalld$ sudo gpt -r -vv show disk0

    Apologies I missed this thread.

You mention two disks, one a 320G in the original SATA slot and a 500G (OWC Data doubler) in the Optibay.

    1. Which disk has Bootcamp?

    2. There are known SATA speed issues in the Optibay slot which cause bad behavior.

    3. Can you post the output of sudo dd if=/dev/disk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C (this will check if your NTFS header is intact or not)?

    4. Please post a diskutil list output?

    5. You can fix your MBR and try to see if it will let you see the Windows drive or not. Here are the commands.

    sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0

    setpid 4

    07

    flag 4

    p

    w

    y

    6. You may need to execute Windows startup repair after 5, if the OSX side switches to Bootcamp, but no operating system is found.

You have more than one OS on this machine. Can you post a new thread and post the output of commands (the sudo ones) as have been posted?

Please also post the output of diskutil list on the new thread. Please note that coming-in-this-Fall OS is still in test.

If you are using a Fusion drive, please also post diskutil cs list.

You can install Mavericks on a 16GB USB flash drive and boot from there. Another option if you have two macs is to use Target Disk Mode.

    Hi all,

After reallocating some space to my Windows partition, I realize I'm in a similar boat as many of you. However, my problem is slightly different as I cannot boot into the Mac half, and can only boot into Windows. How do I go about troubleshooting this from the Windows side? I'm only vaguely familiar with batch commands, so please be patient with me Thank you.

EDIT: I'm running Windows 7 on a mid-2012 Macbook pro and was running Mavericks on the other half before this fiasco started.

If you have come this far, please post a new thread, with the output of

    1. diskutil  list

    2. sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/diskX, where X corresponds to each disk from 0 and n

These will have to be executed in a Mac OS X Terminal, which can be started using Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal. #2 will ask you for your administrative password. Typically, OS X software installers ask for the same password.

    Hey LonerT,

Sorry for taking so long I was out of the country last two weeks and unfortunately my internet connectivity was non-existent.

WIndows is on the 500G in the Optibay side. The 320G had the old OSX and Windows operating systems originally, but I accidentally deleted the Windows partition on the old one, but was able to restore a copy to a new partition on the 500G one.

I keep getting no response with the: "sudo dd if=/dev/disk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C". Do I need to change the disk reference for my drive? Or does it create a file output on the drive?

The output for "diskutil list" is:

    /dev/disk0

       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

       3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk1s3

Should I go ahead and try the actions in step 5?

    Any ideas here?

If you update the MBR, it will mark it bootable, but the underlying OS issue still may need a Windows Recovery/Startup Repair.

The command just dumps the file header information to see if there are any signs of NTFS corruption. Use this command (the raw disk rather than the block disk needs to be used).

    "sudo dd if=/dev/disk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C"

    should be

    "sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C"

Your NTFS system seems to be intact. This is good.

You can do step 5, which will make OSX be able to bring up the Windows side, but it will not boot.

At this point a Windows Recovery is required to fix the MBR and load a corrupted Boot Manager, if necessary.
