Q: Is Apple Works still supported?

Is AW still supported or is it replaced by iWorks and is iWorks a free update?

Used to use AW6 all the time but got away from it.  Now I try to go back and it seems to be unfunctional.

TIA  ....goldie

Not for a long time now. The last version, AW6, should work with Snow Leopard because it still supports running PPC applications. iWork is not a direct replacement for AW nor are AW's file formats compatible with iWork applications.

Pages can open AW word processing files.

Numbers can open AW spreadsheet files

Nothing can open AW database files.

iWork replaced AppleWorks but does not have all of its functionality. iWork is only free with a new Mac purchase. You would need an older version of iWork, anyway (iWork '09 will do).

Thanks Kappy!  Thanks "Steve"!  I want it for the Draw and Paint apps.  Seems like all my Snow Leopard functions are disappearing.      iPhoto; AppleWorks; Time Machine; Community Discussions!!!!!  Unless I download Maverick which will nullify my Printer.

The Party's over, now the Fiddler's presenting his bill?  LOL  Time Marches On and the White Rabbit keeps disappearing round the next bend in the road.

Needless to say I'm pretty bummed right now but Mac's still a pretty good deal, hope we're not losing it.

Take a look at the open-source LibreOffice:

Hi Allan!  Thanks for the boost.  I downloaded LibreOffice and realized it was much like OpenOffice which I have and seldom use.  Too much on that plate for me up to now but because of your help here, I realize it (they) have a beautiful "Draw" app and I'll learn to use that.  I did manage to finish the project I was working on (a Birthday Card) after at least 14 hours of fiddling with all sorts of options.  It came out pretty good and what's more important, I learned volumes

Thanks again for the Libre link, wonder who "borrowed" from whom?    or are they the same company under different flags?.

OpenOffice is way out of date. LibreOffice is much more current.

LibreOffice can also open many more different types of files then OpenOffice.

You could be sure to make a backup bootable clone of the older OS X system

    and if Snow Leopard, the version should have been installed with Rosetta in it;

then you could boot the same mac that had the older OS X to use it again, even

after upgrading computer to, say Mavericks. A good external self-powered HDD

can allow a fuller use of your older applications, until you upgrade the Mac itself.

While AppleWorks is a usable software, so long as you have the system to use it.

If you had the 'server version' 10.6, that could be used via parallels/bootcamp for

use with unsupported later hardware that can't run Snow Leopard directly, btw.

    Good luck

Hi Allan!  Did some study of Libre and found this:

    Hi K Shaffer!

I'm still using Snow Leopard and AppleWorks is a complete mess.  Yes, it still works but just barely, I doubt a backup would provide any better service. I could be wrong but don't have time now to experiment.

Libre Office does offer a very complete drawing app but it takes an awful lot of time to learn to  use it.  AW was much more intuitive with finger tip instructions (help) for more difficult problems.  Seems like things just get complicateder and complicateder as time goes by.

Are we suffering with a problem of "Too many cooks...?'

    Thanks for the input.
