Disk image from Snow Leopard to Mavericks

I have an older macbook running Snow Leopard backed up via time machine on an external hard drive.

I recently purchased a second hand 2011 MacBook Pro which was working perfectly; I installed Mavericks and then when prompted used the time machine to set up the computer.

I now have several problems:

The wifi detects networks but when you try to select them nothing happens and the network diagnostics simply says it cannot repair the problem but not what the problem is.

If I try to update programmes it tells me I cant as I'm using a disk image.

If I connect an iphone or camera and try to import photographs via iphoto it gives me the option to import, I click ok and then nothing happens, the camera also disappears from the folders list.

The computer repeatedly tells me that I haven't backed up to time machine but when I select the disk it does nothing in the same way as the wifi.

It is driving me mad, please can someone help.

Thanks

MacBook Pro, iOS 7.1.2
