To add mkv videos to itunes ,you'd better convert MKV to iTunes supported MP4 or MOV.

I use Avdshare Video Converter , which may convert MKV to iTunes MP4 or MOV within minutes and without quality loss.

It also converts MKV to audio formats compatible with iTunes, like MKV to MP3, MKV to CAF3,MKV to AIFF,MKV to AC3,MKV to M4A, or MKV to Apple LossLess.

I don't know much about .mkv I believe it is a package format. If you're lucky you can open it in a program such as Streamclip and re-save it as .mp4, but that's only if the enclosed codecs work in .mp4 Otherwise you'll have to use one of the many free (or I am sure eventually somebody who makes one that costs money but basically does the same as the free ones will eventually post here as hidden advertising) transcoders to re-code it to a format playable by iTunes.

iTunes: Frequently asked questions about viewing and syncing videos > What video content works with iTunes and mobile devices? - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2729 -- not very specific other than if it works in Quicktime it works in iTunes.

iTunes doesn't accept .mkv-format videos. Try:
