All devices must be updated to the latest iOS in order for FaceTime to work. See this article for more details.

Unable to make or receive FaceTime calls after April 16, 2014

IF you cannot activate FaceTime, have a look at this.

Or this one.

If you are getting the check the network connection error message, try these suggestions.

Check Settings>General>Date & Time>Set Automatically>On. Make sure that the time zone setting is also set correctly.

If that didn't solve the problem, restart your iPad and try again. If that fails, reset your iPad and try again.

Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

Try a reset. This sometimes cures really weird and hard to explain problems. It might not help, but it will not hurt anything and you will not lose any data.

I assume that you went through the troubleshooting steps in the articles that I posted above. Did you turn FaceTime off, restart the iPad and then activate FaceTime again? Can your friend connect to you if the call starts on his/her end?

You could try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. When you do that, you have to start all over again enering all of the device settings. It's not hard to do, but it is a bit time consuming.

I'm not sure what else to suggest that doesn't involve a fair amount of work (restoring the iPad for instance) and I believe that this could just be a fluke kind of thing that will work it self out in a day or two anyway. There is no reason that I can think of why it would have quit working In the first place.
