Please help my e-mail no longer works on my iPhone 4s when away from BT home hub. I have set up as directed by BT but no luck. Can you help please?

What is BT?
I would discuss with BT initially most likely an issue they can advise on
British Telecom .
Perhaps the outgoing server requires authentication/SSL to be on.
Is BT your home internet provider as well as the email provider? If so, many providers require you to be connected to their internet in order to check your email.

and I suggest you delete the new BT mail settings( and the old mail settings ) and then recreate the new BT mail
Thanks Peter for the reply. A different day a different issue. I have deleted & recreated the e-mail account & contacted apple who very helpful. I can now get my e-mails but cannot send any as it says now that my user name & password are not recognised by the server.

That will be the SMTP settings ,see the doc above .
you also can add the user id and password ,despite it saying not required in SMTP settings
