Macbook won't update past 10.5.5

I have a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8, (Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) I cannot get it to update past 10.5.5. When I go to update it, it says "Software Update doesn’t have any new software for your computer at this time." However, my itunes it on 10.6.3 which my computer says is the current version?? But itunes is on 11.3.... Please help! I want to not only update my computer but update my iTunes as well. My iphone will not sync with my Macbook or iTunes.

I think they told us everything except the Mac model:

(Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM)

That's sufficient to know they can upgrade to 10.7.5.

It could be MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro.

Also depending on the age it may or may not be able to upgrade to 10.8 or later.

Regardless, this tip should help determine if to go to 10.6.8, 10.7.5, or 10.8 or later:

Upgrading to 10.7 and above, don't forget Rosetta!

Justin is correct. The early 2008 model maxes out at Mac OS X 10.7.5, but you must get the 10.6.3 installer disc from Apple directly to be able to get to 10.6.8. Then the decision time comes to see if 10.7.5 is worth it, given the lack of Rosetta:

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271

10.6.8 Security updates include: 10.6.8 2013 Security Update 004, 2013-005 Java update (note Java is not current until Mac OS X 10.7.3 from Java.com).

Late 2008 MacBook models max at 10.9.4, but not early.

Is my iOS currently up to date? My iTunes is what I really want to update. It says it requires a 11.1 or higher to sync with my iPhone. However when I go to update it says it's there is no new software.

I'm sorry! I get lost in all the updates/operating systems. I guess I two questions in my post that I didn't clarify very well. Is my iOS currently good to go and if not why won't it update and why will my itunes not update to allow my iphone to sync??

Thank you!

Hi ErinLee_06,

I have the same exact computer and unfortunately we are being left in the dust. We can't upgrade anything on our OS 10.5.8. The only way around your (and my) issue is to get Snow Leopard 10.6.3. You can buy it for about $20 bucks through Apple. It is probably a good idea as the more time goes by, the more our applications (such as Safari) will start to malfunction. Hope this helps and good luck.

Yup, must have been posting while that was being posted, I see it now.

(oops, seems I have confused a couple of threads, apologies for the repetition)

Erin,

To give you an update, I installed Snow Leopard on my computer with no problems. It works sooooo much better now. I'm confident that it should fix your glitches as well. All of my applications are running much better. You should be able to sync your iphone and update to the newest version of itunes.
