Why is there no sound through my tv when I connect an hdmi cord?

When I connect my HDMI cord to my macbook pro, the sound comes from the laptop and not the television. When I went through the settings it says no output controls, what does this mean? How can I fix this?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), iOS 7.1.2

Hi TimReyna,

If you are still having this issue, you may want to double check that the audio output has been set for the HDMI out, and/or try setting it back to the internal speaker, restart, then set it to the HDMI. "No Output Control" simply means that the volume will be controlled by the external device (for example, the TV or receiver in the case of HDMI); the computer will output a line-level audio signal.
