Macbook pro late 2011 Kernel Panic: bad ram? Not really

Hi guys, I'm Experiencing random kernel panics with my MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Late 2011. The kernel panics are completely random but I found a way to reproduce it with playing 2 videos in youtube simultaneously. The longest interval between kernel panics is about 20 minutes; I got sometimes 2 hours results.

Running the mac in safe mode, I can use the mac for hours and the kernel panic will not happen.

Strange thing is that the problem arise even when I load a linux live distro (ubuntu): this makes me think it's an hardware related problem.

I think my problem is related to this thread: Processor context corrupt.

I already changed the ssd and the ram (2x4 GB new Crucial modules) but kernel panic is still happening. No results even resetting PRAM and SMC.

Here's a little extract of kernel panic: as you'll see there are no third party modules loaded and applications installed.

My main concern is: could this be overheating related? In idle mode my mac is around 50°C and overloaded it reaches 94°C. Maybe gpu and ram do not get enough cooling and so I have a kernel panic (in which ECC uncorrected errors are showed). I installed the software fan control and set the lowest temperature thresholding but still get same kernel panic. Is it worth to get new thermal paste for the CPU? P.s. RAM does not show any ecc error in the hardware list section.

Temperature levels are affected by several things such as the type and number of applications open, the ambient temperature, how the MBP is physically positioned and occasionally by foreign matter inside the unit. The temperatures that you describe for given circumstances are not necessarily out of line. Here is a screenshot of a temperature monitor from my MBP as I respond to you:

This is with a very light load on the MBP resources and is less than the 50°c that you report, but there could be explanations for the differences. The specific details would have to be examined but all told I do not view this as a matter for grave concern.

Temperatures in the 90°c+ range are not unusual when running applications such as Skype or rendering video. Again knowing the details would be required to make a definitive statement one way or the other.

Be aware that there are thermal shutdown provisions in the MBP that will protect it from heat damage.

Ciao.

Yeah, I see. The fact is that I don't know what else to do. Overheating is one of the things I would bet. Apart from replacing the logic board, what else should I do? I read about reinstalling the firmware but I don't know if that's the case. Moreover, resetting SMC my charger did not change colour (maybe SMC was not really deleted?). Thanks

Update:

To give it a try I disconnected the battery on my mac and voilà: no more panic for >4 hours! As far as I know, when battery is not present, CPU speed is limited and reduced (I think -3x) so actually it might be a problem of:

a) dead battery (even if from system info battery health is normal)

b) cpu running at max speed (causing so a kernel panic).

I reconnected the battery and ran the same test I did without battery. This time to limit cpu usage I used a software called 'Apppolice'. I limited both GoogleChrome and Safari and for >1 hours no kernel panic. When I disabled 'Apppolice' boom! After 2 minutes I had a kernel panic.

So, basically my concern is: is it worth to buy a new battery to see if it's causing the problem or is the CPU itself the problem?

Does anyone knows some good software to limit CPU speed so that I can try running at lower speed (checking this way if kernel panic comes)?

Thanks

App Police is an application that is a new for me. Very interesting. When the battery is disconnected (or dead), OSX will throttle the CPU, thus possibly explaining the similar results experienced with App Police.

If possible I would rid the MBP of Google Chrome. It has a history of compatibility problems with OSX.

Open System Information>Power and post this from your MBP:

(Make certain that the charger is connected)

There may be a clue regarding you MBP battery.

Ciao.

Jul 26, 2014 8:32 AM in response to sn4psh0t

I see no issues with your current battery, so a replacement would be pointless. Throttling the CPU thus making the MBP functional really is not the optimum solution. I would be inclined to go to an Apple store again ( different store or technician) and have the MBP reevaluated. This time I would ask what specifically is the problem. The logic board contains many parts.

Ciao.

Wow, I’ve been having the same problem with my 2011 MacBook Pro for several weeks now. I’ve tried all the same things. My kernel panics usually cancelled startup. As others have reported, I could do a routine of zapping the PRAM and then Safe Boot, and that would work for a while - usually until the machine went to Sleep and I tried to reawaken it. Yesterday, I decided to trash my Flash, thinking that some of the Flash updates might have corrupted something on the video side of the system, because the problem appeared to be a bad Display or Video card, yet it seemed to respond to software tweaks (like the Safe Boot). That seemed to work for the rest of the day, but then this morning, it wasn’t working anymore. So now, I’ve just tried trashing the two kexts as sn4psh0t suggested, and so far it’s working! Amazing. So thanks for that! (And does anyone know WHY this workaround would work...?) I realize this thread is already close to a year old, but the problem is very fresh for me...

Ok so I'm not out of the woods yet. Just frozen out of Safari twice with the vertical blue bars covering the screen. So I guess trashing those kext files wasn't the answer for me. So.. have there been any new proposed fixes for this problem in the past few months? I'd appreciate any advice that anyone might have found useful... I'm not ready to trash this MacBook Pro yet... although I found I couldn't upgrade it beyond System 10.6.8 without toasting the logic board - replaced the logic board twice under warranty, and after that, I gave up trying to upgrade. So there are definitely some quirks with this model/year...
