Internet accounts preference pain won't load

I have an issue where my Internet Accounts preferences pane won't load and when I try to sign-out of my iCloud account, it tells me that Parental Controls are turned on (which they aren't). You will see a bunch of Calendar errors because I was following the advise of another thread and cleared out the contents of the Mail and Calendar folders in ~\Library but this didn't help. I have exhausted all of the threads that I can find. When I create a new profile on my mac, it can connect just fine.

When I try to open the Internet Accounts pane in Preferences I get the following logs:

7/21/14 8:29:48.347 PM com.apple.preferences.internetaccounts.remoteservice[1022]: NSViewServiceApplication discovered remote host PID 724

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore is not, in itself, a solution.

First, empty the Trash, if possible.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) 2>&- | wc -l | pbcopy

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.

The output of the command will be a number. It's automatically copied to the Clipboard. Please paste it into a reply.

The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.

Back up all data.

Step 1

If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.

Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):

sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-

This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.

Step 2 (optional)

Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.

Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

Utilities Terminal

from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:

res

Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:

resetpassword

Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.

Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.

Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.

Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button

Select

Restart

from the menu bar.

So, we are getting closer. I ran the find command and when it didn't fix the issue, I ran the Reset ACLs. Now, I can log into my iCloud pane and it shows all of the iCloud services. I can't enable mail or calendar. It locks up when I try. Also, the Internet Accounts pane still won't open.

I ran the first find command you gave me and it resulted in 24. Any other thoughts?

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

It seems my system is getting flakier. I think at this point that I would be best served doing a clean install and starting over. I really appreciate you helping me troubleshoot as much as you did. When I first posted I was hoping that you, Linc, would see my issue and help. I have seen your work on many other threads. Thank you again.

I have met the same problems in OS X Yosemite. When I try to upgrade my Mavericks to Yosemite, the whole install progress well, and when the Mac restart to promote to enter iCloud information, something wrong happened, I cannot continue, and only I can do is forcing to restart Mac. Then all things looks well, but the iCloud panel in System Preferences looks wrong. All operations are disabled, only I can do is re-enter password to verify. But the things after are all the same with AgBACK said, I cannot login my iCloud account, neither I can modify any settings in the iCloud panel. My iMessage, FaceTime cannot sign in neither.

I have the same problem when trying to launch the Notifications PrefPane.

I run 10.9.4 on a 13" Macbook pro from May 2014.

Mavericks reinstalled on my machine 2 weeks ago due to other problems...

This problem does NOT occur If I create a new User and start the PrefPane from that user and I get this printout when I start the SystemPreferences from Command Line.

xxxxxx:~ aaaaaa$ 2014-09-09 14:26:10.070 System Preferences[5557:303] ### com.apple.preference.notifications instantiatePrefPaneObject exception:service com.apple.preference.notifications.remoteservice failed to init an instance of NotificationCenterPrefRemoteViewService on behalf of <NSRemoteView: 0x7fc86b76f4b0> due to {

Update:

I tried

sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-

and the following step (Reset Home Dir Permissions and ACL).

Unfortunately neither iCloud nor the Internet Account panels open.

Am on 10.10.8 on an MacBookPro.

I get EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL) in com.apple.preferences.icloud.remoteservice_...

EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT) in com.apple.internetaccounts

in the diagnostic reports in case that helps.

Any further hints appreciated. Could Tinker Tool 4 help? Fresh install of OSX?

So, what worked in the end for me:

- Recap: Symptoms were: iCloud and Internet Accounts panels in System Preferences did not open (error regarding preference pane)

- I moved all of MyUsername > Library > Mail Content into a parking lot folder I created

- I noticed that then the iCloud and Internet Accounts panels would open again

- I checked Library > Mail > V2 and moved out all files that were last modified to a parking lot (a bunch, ca. 7 or 8 had the same date and time stamp (to the minute) and included info.plist files in a few mailboxes)

- Mail would start up again with an "Import messages" window

- I cancelled that and moved a few files back in, checking after each whether it would still get to this point

- the one that got left out was "MailData > Envelop Index-wal" so that would be the likely culprit

Note: I had also moved out iCloud ID files (each with a nr and one with .lock and link files to the respective emails), but I suspect they did not play a role as I created a second user at one point and thought I need to move everything over to that user and noticed that both preference panes locked up there as well when I moved the V2 folder into place there

Let me know if it happens to help someone else also.
