Q: Early 2013 MacBook Pro Repair?

I just bought an early 2013 macbook pro off of ebay and fired it and heard a humming/whirring sound coming from the top right side of the laptop. So I googled a bit and found some forums that said to reset certain thing by powering down and then a keyboard combination. Well none of those worked. So I ran a hardware diagnostic and it gave me this after the test was done: 4HDD/11/40000000:SATA(0,0) ....Now I'm no genius but I can say that, that error code has nothing to do with the fan. So I guess my question here is a 2 parter: 1. How much will it cost me to fix the fan, 2. What does that code mean and how can it be fixed and how much will it cost.

Thanks ahead of time for the replies,

Infamous

    InfamousGamer17,

the diagnostic code above shows that the problem is with its internal disk, so:

    1. If the fan isn’t broken, there’d be no need to fix it.
    2. If you had a non-Retina MacBook Pro, a replacement disk could easily be found for under $100. Since you have a Retina model, you’ll need to do some shopping around to find a suitable SSD for it — and it will cost more than a HDD would.

That error code for your retina MBP is meaningless:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4356

Look at the iFixit.com website for parts, prices and instructions for the fan.  Or take the MBP to an Apple store for a FREE evaluation and you will be advised as to the cost for a fan replacement,.

    Ciao.

Would you say that it is more safe and cost effective for me to do it myself instead of having apple do it

I have never taken a retina MBP apart, but in a non-retina MBP, fan replacement is easy.  Look at the iFixit web site instructions and see if it seems to be within your capabilities.  If you do it yourself it should be less expensive than if done by Apple.   However you can bring the MBP to an Apple store for a FREE evaluation and cost estimate.  Then you can make an informed decision.

Note that the retina MBPs require a pentalobe driver in order to take off the bottom.  They can be found on Amazon.com.

    Ciao.
