Q: can i assign a tone to withheld/unkown numbers?

I have a family member who rings a lot, he comes through as withheld  or unknown but tends to ring at night and wakes me up ! he doesn't realise and I cant change his behaviour or him coming through as withheld but because of this I tend to keep my phone on silent 24/7.... I realise this isn't practical log term so can I assign a certain tone or preferable put on silent all incoming withheld numbers?

iPhone 4S, OS X Server

I don't want to block him but rather put him on silent so I don't hear him ring if im in bed. I know his number , he comes through from a landline and comes through withheld because he has this preference with his operator to have a private number. any persuading him to change this doesn't work, he is my brother with slight learning difficulties so cant block, but don't want to keep my phone on silent any longer for cases when I lose my phone and ask someone to ring it to help me find it like today lol

Put your phone on Do Not Disturb when you want not to hear his calls and set it to allow All Contacts. Anyone listed in your contacts can call you. It's worth noting that, even if your phone is muted, if you have Find My iPhone enabled and if you log into iCloud, you can send a tone to your phone that will sound even if the sound is off.

You can add his number in to your contacts then you will see a option

    Here's How:

    1. From the iPhone home screen, tap the Phoneapp.
    2. In the Phone app, tap Contacts in the bottom center of the screen.
    3. From your contacts list, tap the name of the person who you want to assign a ringtone to.
    4. When that person's contact information appears, tap the Edit button in the top right corner.
    5. When their contact information is editable, swipe down the screen until you get to the Ringtone section. You should find this just under the email section. TapRingtone.
    6. When you do, the list of ringtones available on your iPhone is displayed. This includes all the ringtones and alert tones that come built into your iPhone, as well as any ringtones you've or bought and synced to your phone. Tap on one to hear it play.
    7. When you have selected the ringtone you want to assign to that person, tap the Done (iOS 7) or Save (iOS 6 and earlier) in the top right corner to save your selection.
    8. Tap Done in the top right.
    9. Now, whenever that person calls you, you'll hear that ringtone. If you only give that person the tone, and don't assign it to anyone else, you'll be able to tell who's calling without even looking at the screen.

    Hello,

    heres some advice:

If you loose your phone and it's on silent and if you have any other IOS devices in your house you can use "Find My iPhone" then you sign in with your iCloud account. Apple ID and password. Once you've done that click "Devices" then it should, show your phone select it after that you can click "Play a sound" no matter what  even if your phon. Is on silent and is turned on then it will play a sound even if it's on silent.

The caller has Caller ID blocked. Whether or not their number is in contacts makes no difference. And, you can't block numbers that have caller ID withheld nor can you assign ringtones to them.

I have bought a silent ringtone for this but even though I bought it under the ringtone section in iTunes it went into my music app and not into my ringtones? any idea.. when I assign a ringtone to someone or assign any ringtone it gives me no option to use any music in music app, only iphone default ringtones or iphone alert tones.

Did you buy it by going through Settings>Sounds>Ringtone>Store? If you're buying from the iPhone, I believe you have to do it that way.

when I assign a ringtone to someone or assign any ringtone it gives me no option to use any music in music app, only iphone default ringtones or iphone alert tones.

That's correct. You can't use anything that isn't listed in the Ringtones/Alerts section.

Can't you just ask him not to phone you between such and such hours?

If you did it that way, it would show up in Ringtones. So, perhaps you misremember. Unfortunately, ringtones are a single download per purchase. You will need to pay to download it again. On the other hand, they're not terribly expensive.

    Best of luck.
