Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
After working fine until yesterday the printer job progress box suddenly shows the error message "The Printer is not connected". The printer shows green light "idle" in the System Preferences. I have restarted printer, restarted Mac, downloaded and installed the latest printer driver from Canon, re-set the network which is all I can think of in terms of trouble shooting. I am running OS X Mavericks, latest version.

How is the printer connected? Directly to the computer or Wi-Fi for example. If directly to the computer, try another cable.
Your profile shows OS 10.5.5 - you might want to update it.

Thank you very much for your reply.
I am printing with Wifi and have re-connected the printer to the network several times. The proof that it is there is shown through the green light "Idle" in the System Preferences. Also, I am running OS X 10.9.4 - not sure where you got the information that I run 10.5.5

Try resetting the printing system.
k, done that; when adding printer/scanners the Pixma shows up and I can add it - however, it is shown only as a scanner (but not printer). I have downloaded and re-installed latest printer driver from Canon just now again. No change (even after another reset).
Hi Eric. Got the problem resolved: I needed to reinstall the printer driver again which somehow has gotten corrupted. Problem solved! Thanks for your support anyway.

Having the same problem. Can you post the link for the driver you used? I tried one from the Canon site but it didn't resolve the issue.

Frustration was getting the better of me and I was close to buying a new printer.
TO ALL WHO ARE HAVING THE PROBLEM WITH CONNECTING TO ANY PRINTER:
Go to your printer - look at device settings
Write down the IP address of the printer you are using
Go to mac
System Preferences > Print and Fax > Add Printer > IP > type in IP address of printer > Select make/model of printer > Print.
THANK YOU! downloading the driver from your link works for me too, just purchased a new MacAir and could not figure out how to connect to the MX870. Adding the IP address method didn't work for me.
