why is it that all my music purchased privately has no cloud shown on the album cover and how do you know iTunes match has saved them. they do seem to be showing on my iphone.

Nothing new is stored in iTunes Match until you update it in iTunes. Privately purchased tracks will be uploaded only if Apple has those tracks in its own library. Otherwise, Match will upload the tracks from your computer.
In iTunes on your computer, go to song view and add iCloud status column - to do this, go to menu > view > view options and tick box. This will tell you what has been matched, purchased, uploaded, duplicate, ineligible or waiting. Read this iTunes Match: Understanding the iCloud Status icons. if no cloud icon is shown against a track, it will be one that is in the cloud and is still on your computer. If there is a download icon, the track is only in the cloud.
