Q: Just updated my RAM and now iMac shuts down "due to error" when in FCPX

Hi there,

So, I just purchased FCPX last week.  Edited one of my projects only to find that my RAM is overloaded and isn't allowing my computer to handle to workload.  Therefore I upgraded my RAM today to the max (16GB). Get my iMac home and up and running, everything looks good. I start up FINAL CUT PRO X, load my Library.....then boom.....shut down "due to error". THREE TIMES.  Below is my system and info on new RAM.  PLEASE HELP ASAP AS THIS IS TIME SENSITIVE!  I upgraded my RAM due to the suggestion that it would solve my slow rendering/choppy video playback in FCPX.

Thanks. Ashley

SYSTEM: 21.5 inch iMac OS X version 10.9.4 (Mavericks)

PROCESSOR:   3.2 GHz Intel Core i3

STORAGE: 364 GB (out of 999.99 GB)

MEMORY:  16 GB (was 4 GB before upgrade)

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

    I had 2X2 HYNIX PC3 10600's in there.

They removed those and upgraded to the PNY 8GB ones.

*why did they remove the others and not just add more to the other slots available???

That looks to be incorrect RAM, as it is 1600mHz speed. Also note that PNY RAM seems to have a poor reputation with regard to RAM for a Mac. If possible return the RAM for a refund and check out the link below.

I have to agree with stedman1 here, it looks like your Mac may not like the memory that was installed. It looks like it is recommended to use memory chips in the 2GB to 4GB sizes, so if you want to max it out, you will need 4 x 4GB modules. You also want to make sure the chips being used are the PC3-10600 or is compatible. Getting memory that is a faster speed is not always better because it may not be fully compatible.

The link stedman1 linked to is a good place to get memory online. OWC has been around a long time. For more info on your Mac and its memory, check this link out: iMac: How to remove or install memory

thinking right iJonesy. Returned to original RAM! Comparability was probably the issue. Going to get another brand RAM and try and stay with PC3 10600.

so you are suggesting instead of 2 x8 I should consider 4x4.

WOuldnt it it stand to reason with 4memory slots I could do 4x8 and give myself 32gb of RAM ???

As stated in your other post, your Mac needs 4gB sticks. The maximum for your model is 16gB (4X4gB)
