Airplay works very well with an Apple TV. There's no "rigging" involved.

Why?

Is there a technical reason why Apple couldn't put this as a feature?

This seems as though it could be a value added feature they already have....

but what do I know... I am just a college kid who wishes I could watch videos from my tv

You have to use home-sharing and then access your iTunes library through the computers icon

With iTunes 11 you will access trhough File -> Home sharing.
