Q: How to update past version 10.6.8.

Needing some assistance.  My computer says 'software up to date'. I note that my desktop doesn't have Icloud - there is MobileMe and I am unable to get access.  How do I upgrade software?  Working on a project and can't get photos off my Ipad - yes I have plugged Ipad to desktop - doesn't recognize the photos.

For iCloud you'll need OS X 10.7.5 at a minimum.  This Apple document, System requirements for iCloud, describes what OS X version you need for the various features of iCloud.  To upgrade to Mavericks (free)  you'll need to meet these requirements: OS X Mavericks: System Requirements

You have 10i.6.8 so that meets part of the requirements.  It's the hardware requirements next that you'll have to meet.

Also be aware that some 3rd party applications may not be compatible with Mavericks.  Visit this website to check the compatibility of any 3rd party apps you might have: RoaringApps.
