iPod not working when disconnected from iTunes/desktop

My iPod 2nd gen has worked fine for a 3-4 years now. BUT lately, once I charge it and disconnect from iTunes on my desktop, the iPod will not play.


The "wheel" won't respond to touch and switch from the MUSIC folder to songs in order for me to select one. It won't respond when I try to push down and re-boot the iPod. Methinks the battery has died and needs to be replaced. Any thoughts?
