OK, but it seems some people in this thread were claiming that they ALL do this.

Some people don't know better. I think we're at least two who've said that their replacement fixed the issue.

It just seems that some regions have more of them than others - so replacements might still be defective.

I already got 3 replacement models and all of them had the high pitch noise my 4th is in transit. If that one also makes the noise i'm considering on getting a refund.

I already got 4 replacement iPods (8 GB) and all of them made the high pitch noise (and the fourth also hat the clickwheel problem). Tommorow I'll call Apple to get a refund, because it's really annoying.
In a german forum there are some people too, who said that there replacement iPod doesn't make this noise. So maybe there are some silent iPod out there.
Oh, and you know what really *****? The German Apple-Hotline, they've told me that they don't know this problem for four times. And of course I explained them the "pitched noise" problem four times.
So when I got my money back, I'm going to search a silent one in some big supermarkets.

Btw. did one of you guys notice that the noise isn't is so loud when you "boot" your iPod into "diagnostic mode"?
Maybe they can solve it with a firmeware upgarde.

The circuitry that controls the LCD screens/CRT
screens is KNOWN for having Harmonics issues like
this when they malfunction. More than likely the
    problem is faulty circuitry.

If it was a design flaw with the board, they would
all do it, and they don't.

The problem with the screen theory is that the noise doesn't go away when the "new brighter" backlight goes off, and even more significantly, the noise DOES go away when the nano is connected to the usb port even though the screen stays on.

This is my experience with a 2nd gen 2gig nano ordered from apple store in the first few days:

    - Plug nano into usb, press to ear: Screen on but not backlight. Very slight whine and occasional other noises in a pattern not unlike a few bursts of writing to a hardrive. Must press to ear to hear sounds.

    - unmount nano from desktop, leave usb connected: Screen and backlight now on, no increase in whine.

-unplug usb from nano: large increase in whine. Now audible at arms length.

On another note did anyone else on the forum receive an email from someone claiming to be a "Mike Garcia" at Apple Sacramento? I did but he disappeared after one contact so I don't know if that was real or a phishing scam.

after so many people saying their 2nd gen nano is effected i dont really care to get a replacement or not

i just want to know the cause and the potential risk to problems

but apple seems to be slow at figuring this stuff out, they should at least have a section on this site to keep us up to date after so many complaint about this issue

I agree, i wonder why none of the apple employees respond in this topic to provide us with some additional information on the issue. Do they even read these forums? I've never seen one reply yet...

All I can tell you is that they are aware of the issues and that their idea of damage control is to refuse to replace the ipod for what they call "minor" issues. (Like my click wheel being misaligned and rubbing on the case.)

Even after I told the guy If they'd just fix it I was planning on buying my wife the 8 gig for christmas (I have the 2 gig, she likes a lot more music than I do. hehe.) he said technically there is "nothing wrong" with my ipod, So I guess a loose and rubbing clickwheel is normal...

I told him if there's nothing wrong with my Ipod then they make a **** poor product and I wasn't buying anything else from Apple until the issue was resolved to my satisfaction. He didn't seem to care much.

    Hey everyone,

I just got my 2G Nano and it too has a buzz-like sound that is quite annoying. I didn't notice it first till i held it close to my ear. I just called the apple helpline and the person i spoke to haven't heard of the problem. Hopefully i can go back to the store and change it... I'm just worried it'll turn out the same since alot of people's make the same noice
  • cmunk Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
If you can only hear it when you press it up to your ear then it's not the problem - it's only a problem if you can hear it from an arms length....

WHy would it be a problem if you could only hear it when you press it against your ear?

Some people in this thread need to use some more common sense...
  • Energie Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
True, but you got to take in account that some people have bad hearing and thus only will hear the annoying sound by pressing the nano up against their ears.
  • Holly Golightly Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
Ofcourse it's a problem if i paid money for it and it's making a noise that bothers me. Apple didn't write anywhere that it would be emitting noises. Also, i don't have to press it against my ear to hear it, i just said i didn't notice it at first until i held it close to my ears.

I made a recording of the high-pitched sound you can listen to it here:

    download

This way we can check if everyone is talking about the same noise.
  • Daniel K. Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
    Yep, that's the sound.
  • sjonamac Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
yes thats the noise. I tried to buy one today but the only other store in Oslo has also returned their 8Gb Nanos. He said I cant get one here until more are sent via the UK, and Apple have not said when that will be unfortunately.

Anyone else manage to pick one up here buzz free?
