I have OS X Mavericks on an USB key. I know that the USB key works because I have used it to install OS X on several other Macs but it is not working with this one (subject). By holding the Alt key down during boot, I can choose the USB key as boot device but when I do, I just get a stop sign. Does anyone know why?

The latest version of OS X you can install on a Core Duo machine is Snow Leopard. Beginning with Lion 10.7 a Core 2 Duo is required.

This seems strange. I can not boot to an attached USB harddrive with Mountain Lion either. I have removed the CD/DVD drive in it because it was broken. Is it not possible to boot without an internal CD/DVD drive in a Mac?
