Q: iPhoto backup and external storage

I have run out of disc space on my macbook. It is full of photos. Everything is backed up with time machine, but I am going to buy another external HD to store all the old photos. I know I can just copy the whole iPhoto library to the HD, but is there a better way? Perhaps an app that will allow my to incrementally add any new photos, but not try to be an exact copy of the macbook (which will have the older photos deleted). Or should I just start to use iPhoto from an externally stored library (this makes me nervous, and obviously I will need to change Time Machine settings). What is the best system? Many thanks.

Can I use the same external drive to time machine my laptop and my desktop?

Yes.  See this tutorial:  Can I back up 2 or more Macs to the same external HD?

    Yes

I run TimeMachine on two Macs both backing up to the same TimeCapsule - TM keeps the backups separate

This Q slightly off-piste so be gentle when you tell me to go jump..

Have swapped SSDs for my internal HDD - 250g.  Current spare capacity +/- 47g

Have a GTech 750g i use for TM.

Will be road tripping around USA later this year / next for 6 months.

Want to travel with my MBP not least for uploading my dig pictures to iPhoto/aperture.

Want to leave a back-up in UK prior to departure - catastrophe risk management

Like the idea of a copy of iPhoto/aperture library on separate ext disk and use of iPhoto manager maybe

Want to keep using TM back ups on the road but TM already deleting old BU earlier than 1st April 2014.  Would quite like to keep Mavericks...

    SO

    1. i could buy a $9 enclosure case for HDD and make a clonable back up and leave that in UK - could I ADD to that a TM restore of OS X from pre-Yosemite?
    2. The GTech has only TM back ups so not bootable - how large a 2nd ext drive do I take with for bootable purposes?
    3. Should this be a separate drive to the one with full back up of iPhoto/Ap library as per above advice - Photos currently show 83g usage on storage analysis

Thanks in advance - always a HAPPY customer

You should never have the Back up and the Library on the same disk.  If the disk goes down you have nothing. You need two disks.
