Mac Lockup

I'm running OS X Version 10.9.4 on a 3.06 GHz Intel processor and 4 GB of RAM on an iMac. Within the last two weeks my Mac locks up and I cannot get the system to respond. Sometimes the power button will not restart the system and I have to unplug it and start all over. The keyboard batteries and mouse batteries are in the 90% capacity range. I have tried letting the system go to sleep by itself and using Sleep from the menu and no matter which way I leave the system, there is a high probability it will lockup. I have scanned the system with Sophos and found no tthreats. Any ideas would be helpful.

You've installed Genieo, which is adware. Uninstall it by running this: http://thesafemac.com/art.

According to another user, John Galt:

"Maintain" is the "Cocktail" utility, which appears frequently in problem reports. Uninstall it according to its instructions.

Lastly, uninstall Sophos. As you may be able to tell already, it can't always detect threats/problems, and some users have reported it to be the cause of slow-downs. At least uninstall it temporarily to see if there is an improvement.

Restart after the above programs are uninstalled.
