How can I make fine adjustments to the zoom in Maps?

The zoom function on Apple Maps seems to be limited to the Command + or Command - key, with no zoom function from the Magic Trackpad. For Google Maps, the Trackpad provides a two-finger zoom. In both cases, there is really no fine control as to the resulting area displayed. Is there a way to achieve such a result?
