Desktops10.6 was issued on a DVD. If you cannot find your DVD, you can buy a new "Full Retail" 10.6.3 DVD from the Apple Online Store for about US$20, and they will ship it to you.
Then you can use Software Update to bring it up to 10.6.8, and the Mac App Store will become available.

DesktopsYour MacBook 6,1 from 2009 can download and run any current Mac OS X including 10.9 Mavericks,
IF you have enough RAM installed.
