Q: Saving scanned documents/photos

I have a Canon MG6450 scanner, which I truly despise, but I don't seem to be able to save the scanned stuff anywhere and open it without using Finder or Preview.

Disregarding the scanner doesn't do anything I find at all useful, where am I supposed to save the scans and what do I use to open them? If I save in pictures I can't open them using iPhoto, keynote, pages or any of the programs that arrived with the mac, despite being assured that I could. It's a real pain having to use finder because I can't remember all the dates used or filenames, obviously!

II also have a major problem with email because I haven't worked out how to use Apple's mail client - I'm really that stupid - and hotmail is just the worst for compatibility issues, slowness and just being plain ugly. And nothing from my mac will upload so there's a real problem, I'm just glad I don't depend on it too much for my business, which would be bankrupt if I did.

Anyway, any help will be gratefully received, I really don't want to regret buying an iMac but they are nowhere near as intuitively easy to use as what's claimed, in fact not easy to use at all.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

To begin with I do not believe that these basic items are missing, I believe your inexperience (and a lot of frustration) is causing you not to see what you look at right now.

    So we will check.

Minimize or close any open apps so that you have a clean desktop, Press Shift-Command-3 (all 3 buttons at the same time) this will take a picture of your screen and file it on the desktop with the name 'Screenshot followed by todays date.

Post back when you have done that and I will tell you how to post it here for me to see it.

You're almost certainly right, I'm very inexperienced with Apple stuff apart from the phones which are a dream. Never considered the computers would be any different but hey-ho.

As for frustration, spot on! At this point I must thank you for your patience as well as assistance.

    Screen shot done.

OK, you have a file on your desktop (the screenshot)

Reply to this post, in the Editor dialog box there is a toolbar, on the toolbar is a small camera, click on it and you will be able to select that file and post it here, then I can see if Spotlight is actually missing.

It won't do anything. I have managed to find the screenshot but nothing happens when I click "insert" on the dialogue box, not for the last five minutes anyway. I understand that at 3.1 MB it will need trimming but that long?

I will leave the room for a while and see what happens this time.

I will give you a solid piece of advice

It is important that you read before you click, the size limit (2MB) is right underneath the insert button.

    Screen Shot 2014-08-15 at 13.19.57.png

Doubleclick on the file (on the desktop) and tell me what it opens in please (we'll be getting back to the screenshot shortly)

And please slow down and look at what you do, pressing without looking is a very bad habit and will get you into difficulty.

Here is a link to Mac Basics 101, you may find it very helpful to read.

    It opens in preview.

I noticed there's a 2MB limit, also that anything larger will be scaled down. None of this is particularly reassuring when it won't even try to upload but, as you say, we'll get back to that.

Thanks for the advice, I'll accept it gladly!

In Preview go to Tools>Adjust Size:

    Screen Shot 2014-08-15 at 13.34.24.png

If not already set choose 'Percent' and reduce the size to 75% or so, not supercritical)

    Screen Shot 2014-08-15 at 13.34.40.png

Leave the resolution as-is but change height and width to 50%, save it and it will be less than 2MB

Thank you. I did read that basics stuff a while back but always good to refresh, especially since I'll never get past basic.

I really appreciate your help, wait to hear the next step.

    Thanks again

It won't upload because it is above the size limit (file size not picture size)

It may be a good idea to go to an Apple Store and pay for some One on One classes in the basics.

Down to 1.8 MB, clicking insert has no effect, sorry.

If all you say is correct your Mac needs to be erased and rebuilt (software) from scratch. That will be no easy task for you. But I doubt that you are correct (sorry)

So lets try a small screenshot. Press Shift-Command-4, a crosshair will appear onscreen, drag it arounnd the TOP RIGHT corner of the screen, (where these two icons appear)

Screen Shot 2014-08-15 at 13.48.26.png(can you see those 2 icons at the top right of your screen)

Release when there is a box around them and another very small screenshot will appear. Insert that one

Does that mean that you have found Spotlight?

If yes use it to find Image Capture.

How do you do that highlighted cut and paste stuff? should be my next question.

Yes, I can use that to open image capture, I'm still stuck with what to do after saving files, as there is still no way I can email files from preview.

If they can be opened from a stock apple program and subsequently attached to email I'd be really happy to hear how. Guess this is what I've been trying to find out all along really, just hadn't encountered anyone with this much kindness or patience before.
