i would like to have a backup on my Mac Pro in addition to my normal backup on my laptop when i travel.
i /do/ have backups of my laptop hard drive at home when i travel but it seems like it would be convenient to also have a backup of my phone on my desktop machine.
is this possible or practical?

As long as you set the iTunes on the computers not to automatically sync, it should be no problem to create a backup on more than one machine. Just do not do a sync, just click on the backup button. You also have the choice to create a backup in iCloud as well, which would be accessible anywhere you have Internet access.
Answering for Chris:
On the phone go to Settings/iCloud and scroll down to Storage & Backup. Turn on iCloud backup. From there it's all automatic. The phone will be backed up to iCloud whenever the phone has a WiFi connection and is connected to power. You can also manually backup if you need to from the same screen. The backup to your computer over WiFi is an alternative. You can set up automatic backup to either and then back up the other manually. so on the desktop i can just make sure "automatically sync" is /unchecked/ and then plug the phone into USB and just hit "Backup" and this will put a backup on my laptop?
also, the iCloud backup is a really great idea. i can see a scenario where i am traveling and would need to use this.
can i please ask you how this is accomplished? it seems like if simply by click the iCloud backup option above the This Computer radio button that this is either a backup to my computer /or/ a backup to iCloud. i had earlier been advised to just sync to my machine to avoid any issues with iCloud corruption (i've had unpleasant experience with other datasets using iCloud). can i do both somehow?
also, do you know how the WIRELESS backup option works in iTunes? for instance does this mean that my iPhone backs up to my LAPTOP wirelessly whenever both machines are on the network??
