Mail: Text Encoding problem, or something else?

I have just had a problem with my password for my BT broadband and e-mail accounts and was sent an e-mail containing a temporary password. This is what that e-mail looked like in Apple Mail (no panic about security: I have changed the password!):

User uploaded file

As can be imagined, all these things like <p> and </b> confused me terribly. I tried entering

<b>xmgw4qn5</b>

<p>

as my password and it was rejected.

I then opened Safari and looked at BT's e-mail in BT's webmail. It now looked like this

User uploaded file

That solved my password problem, so I went back to the version in Mail and, thinking that it was a text encoding problem, tried almost every encoding in the 'Message/Text Encoding' menu, but with no success in converting the e-mail into something more normal-looking.

I should be very grateful for explanations, comments and instructions for dealing with any similarly-garbled e-mail that I may receive in the future.

One more addition:

I found this string elsewhere in these Discussions:

Re: character set

So I went to View>Message>Raw Source, and this is what I found:

Does this indicate a problem at the sender's end? But why does the e-mail look normal in webmail and in a different mail client than Apple Mail? Does this not indicate a problem in Apple Mail?

But it doesn't quite explain why Safari shows all those html codes, whereas SeaMonkey's mail client (combined browser and mail client out of the same Mozilla stable as Firefox) does not. Any thoughts about that?

I guess that Safari is following the instructions of the text/plain header, while the others for some reason behave as if it read text/html.
