I have the same picture displaying on all 3000 photos in iphoto. The original pic can be found by clicking on a photo and it is under the identical one over the 3000.

I tried at the apple store to rebuild my photo file. It worked and then reverted to the old problem.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

What is your iPhoto version?

Did you rebuild the database or did you rebuild the thumbnails?

If you have not tried that, rebuild the thumbnails, since clearly the thumbnail are wrong.

Launch iPhoto with the key combination⌥⌘ held down and select "rebuild thumbnails" from the panel. The screenshot is for iPhoto 9.5.1.

We need to know, if your iPhoto library is on an external drive, as LarryHN asked, or if you keep it in your Pictures folder, as is the default. Have you moved the library to a NAS, or to Dropbox? Are you sharing the library with someone?

Are you using any cleaning applications to save space? And which version of iPhoto are you using?

The amount of disk space used by iPhoto makes no difference unless your disk is over full. The key factor is the number of items. Current version of iPhoto are good for up to 1,000,000 items. My Library is more than 10 times the size of the one you broke up, with no performance issues.

Are thee folders of original scans on the same disk? If so then they're not a back up.

I am one of those individuals who can tell when an app starts to run just a bit slower - so I decided at that point to not wait until there was a visible problem and fix it.

Actually they are all in time machine, on removable backup drive, and burned on DVD's, and I have the original photos in photo albums. I just sucked them into IPHOTO to use the faces - was sad I could not print to PDF events with people identified.

That's good to know. You can see invisible problems. 😉

The point is that if your Library was running slowly then there are repairs that you can do. Breaking the library into bits isn't fixing it, it's breaking it. But whatever. Delighted to hear that you have a comprehensive back up strategy. The DVDs won't be much use going forward, of course, but they'll do for now. The reason for my comment was to try encourage you to elaborate on your back up strategy. Just saying you had files in folders might steer someone else down the wrong way.

I keep my iphoto not on external drive. Guess they are always in my pictures. Not sure what NAS stands for. Did do some sharing through dropbox but cant remember what I was trying to do when this problem came up.Started to delete all pictures thinking I had downloaded something wrong and then my daughter found them in the trash and moved them back to Iphoto. still all with a double image. No cleaning applications that I know of and am using Iphoto 11 (9.2.3)

Network Attached Storage - a network drive with an integrated computer that makes your files accessible over a network. I asked, because storing an iPhoto library on such a network drive can corrupt it and is not supported by iPhoto. The same goes for putting your iPhoto library into a Dropbox folder and trying to sync it. This can break the links inside the internal databases and mess up the library.

Did this happen before or after you repaired your iPhoto library and the problem reoccured?

then my daughter found them in the trash and moved them back to Iphoto

How did your daughter move the photos back to iPhoto? "Put back" will not work, when the photos are in the system trash.

Your reply also assumed that everyone has the same size system in re to memory, processors, disc drive.

DVD backup is not from IPHOTO library - its from Folders for Photoshop. Most of the pictures were scanned into Photoshop for repair and correction.

IPHOTO naming option allowed me to group and print/or PDF groups of pictures in various formats.

IPHOTO edit may work for digital pictures - but not for older scanned pictures. When I watch Ken Burns specials with old B&W pictures I find my self thinking of removing all the dots and scratches from the pictures to get a clean image.
