I have been trying to update my original MacBook Air to the newest software. It says on the app store under updates that Mavricks is an update and when I try to, it doesn't work. I have the version 10.7.5 and all my other software is updated.

You said you're trying to "update your original MacBook Air ..."
If you mean you have the first model of MacBook Air that came out, it cannot run Mavericks. This explains:
