Q: If I delete photos from my "camera roll" on my iphone, do they stay in my cloud account?

I keep getting warnings that my storage is almost full. I am wondering if I delete photos in my camera roll, if the originals will stay in my cloud account? I'm not sure if I need to transfer my photos to a another device to make sure they are not lost. This is my first apple product so I am unsure on exactly how these products and services work

No.  Although camera roll photos are included in your iCloud backup, if you delete them from your camera roll and continue to back up your device, the backup containing the deleted photos will be overwritten by one that doesn't and they will be lost.

To keep your camera roll photos, import them to your computer using your usb cable as discussed here: iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer.  After they are imported, you can delete them from your camera roll if you need to free up space on your device.

Thank you! I am now trying to transfer to my laptop. For some reason it will not transfer my photos. I keep getting the " do gou trust this computer?" I keep choosing trust but within seconds of starting a scan states that it could not successfully complete the transfer because the scanner or camera has been disconnected?  Oye! I have some important pictures on my phone I do not want to lose! Do you have any idea why it's being so fidgety?

    You're welcome.

I'm not sure what's causing the problem.  Make sure you are plugging the usb cable directly into your laptop and not a usb hub.  Also look at the bottom of your phone to see if there is lint or other debris on the connector or cable, and make sure you have a good connection to the bottom of your phone.

If worse comes to worse, you can use an app like PhotoSync (http://www.photosync-app.com) to transfer them to your computer over your wifi without using your usb cable.

Again thank you! :-) I will get that done. I really appreciate your advice and the time you took to help me out. I'll get the hang of this sometime!

I believe if you move the photos (from iCloud photos on your computer) to another folder on iCloud, i.e. "my pictures" then they will remain even if you delete them on your iPhone. At least that's the way I've been handling it. The iCloud concept was designed to facilitate automation and therefore the iPhone app has very few "manual" features, such as Microsoft One Drive.
