Q: unlock att iPhone without itunes

My iPhone on ATT is eligible for unlock. The instructions point to erasing and restoring the phone via iTunes. Must I use iTunes or can I just backup to iCloud and then use the phone's erase and restore function. Will that access the authorization for the IMEI and unlock it? My mac is SERIOUSLY out of date and i can no longer upgrade iTunes. In fact, with iCloud I never use it.

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.1.2

Contact AT&T. iPhones can only be unlocked by the carrier to which they are locked.

The process is setup to use iTunes. If your computer cannot be upgraded appropriately, try making an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and see if they will help you do the unlock on their system. They are usually pretty helpful if you pick a not-too-busy time.
