How do I remove the old version of Pages?

When the new version of Pages arrived the old one never left. After I reboot or shut down my computer I have 2 versions of Pages in the dock. It's easy enough to turn off the old version of Pages, but it keeps coming back and I'd like to remove it completely. Help has been of no help so I need your help to solve this problem. Thanks SamO66

Many in the Pages for Mac community regret having deleted the older Pages ’09 v4.3 application as it retains over 100 features/functionality that are missing in Pages v5+. When you read a Pages ’09 document into Pages v5(.2), the latter will filter out any unsupported feature/functionality from the older Pages document.

I dragged and dropped the explicit Pages.app icons for Pages ’09 (/Application/iWork ’09) and Pages v5(.2) (/Applications) to my Dock. I exclusively use the Pages ’09 application file chooser to open older documents, and a double-click on known newer documents to open them in Pages v5(.2).

The differentiation between the older and newer documents can be done with different custom tag colors created in the Finders preferences. Then you can search in Finder for the custom tag name (e.g. p4, p5) and see only those specific documents.

I've removed the old version from the dock many times, but it just kept coming back. Thanks for your reply.

Then there is something wrong with the Dock database. It isn’t putting itself there.

You can reset the Dock database by deleting it, but you will get a default Dock and you will have to customize it afterward.

Open Terminal and copy/paste in this line of commands. They will delete the Dock plist and then quit the Dock which will restart automatically, rebuilding it’s plist.

defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock

If it really is the dock, the commands I gave will delete the current settings and create a new settings file (plist).

You will then have to re-customize the Dock and those changes should stick. Please make sure it's not as Lanny thought and the old version is still running. Closing a document doesn't quit the app like Windows does. You actually must quit the App from the File menu (Cmd-Q).

Also, if the app is open when you restart, the OS will reopen it. All open apps will be in the Dock, regardless of the setting to keep in Dock.

Barney, again thanks for your reply. I don't have the time to try this right now, but wanted to thank you for your help. I expect to be able to get to doing this tonight, but as I run a small business from home I never know when I won't have to extend my working hours. I'll get back to you after I've applied your suggestion. Cheers SamO66

Barney, thanks for your reply, I found terminal, eventually. I had tried spotlight earlier but I wasn't closing safari. Once I closed that and opened applications, there it was. Anyhow I followed your directions and then customized the new dock, reset the computer and there it was again. I'm going to give up and live with it the way it is. Thanks for your help and patience. You get 5 stars, Apple gets none. I seem to have this kind of problem all of the time. Most likely this will be my one and only Apple. Cheers SamO66

If you are willing, there is one more thing to try.

In your user/Library/Preferences folder you'll find two files, com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.dock.db.

The commands I gave you deleted the first one, but didn't affect the second. Move both of those to the Trash, log out, then log back in.

Again, you'll have to rebuild everything.

To get to your user/Library folder, hold down the Option key while selecting the Go menu in the Finder. You'll then be able to select Library from that menu.

If you want to show it permanently, select your home folder in the Finder and type cmd-j to open the View Options. There is a checkbox to show the Library. With that checked, you can see the Library in your home folder.

Beyond that, I'm stumped.

Sam

What exactly is your problem.

It is possible to have both, either or neither version of Pages in your Dock. That is not relevant to how they work, it is just a shortcut to opening the one you want.

You can run both versions on your Mac without problem, but you will not be able to double click on documents to open them in the version that created them, because Apple gave them all the same file extension .pages.

Pages '09 is by far the superior version as Viking has already told you, I hope you are not trying to delete it from your Mac.
